🇨🇦 15 days at home 🇨🇦

Hello from 41,000 ft! In just a few hours I will be returning to Dubai after 15 days at home, and thus my whirlwind of an adventure will continue. When I get back, I’m moving from one apartment to another (from the Dubai/Sharjah border, closer to Dubai’s downtown core), and then off I’ll go again! This time to Zagreb, Croatia! 🇭🇷

While I’m stoked to be checking two new countries and three new destinations off of my list this month, every time I have leave home it gets harder and harder to say goodbye. I just keep reminding myself of how fortunate I am to be travelling the world and that I will be back in late April, if not sooner. Let the countdown begin!

I’ve tried to stay off social media a bit this week so that I could focus my time on friends and family. While 15 days is a significant amount of time, it’s never enough to see everyone.

My first few days at home were spent speaking to journalists on behalf of Emirates in Toronto, Ontario. When I wasn’t in the downtown core, I travelled between London, Hamilton and Burlington, Ontario.

Some highlights- I finally got to see my favourite band, Avenged Sevenfold, live! The inner 13 year old in me couldn’t pass up the opportunity and I got to reunite with some old friends in the process. I got to take in an OHL game with my dad (something my family used to do together a lot) and spend some quality time with my mom for her birthday.

My aunt and uncle (my second set of parents) also took me to my cousins house where I was introduced to the newest addition to the family; baby Elliott. As if this wasn’t exciting enough, I got to reunite with some old friends too and checked out one of Canada’s premier “eats and entertainment” hot spots, The Rec Room. If you’re a fan of air hockey, old school arcade games, and classic Canadian food, this is the place for you! I’ve been meaning to visit for ages now and I couldn’t have asked for better company.

Overall, my time at home was filled with smiles and endless laughter. The distance between my friends and family may be great, but the love and support they’ve shown me throughout this entire journey warms my heart. It is what keeps me going even when things get rough.

Layover Life: Beijing, China

A last minute swap last week led me from Singapore, to Beijing, China! I’m always looking to visit new places, so I couldn’t let this opportunity pass by.

It was my first time visiting PEK and it was highly recommended that I check out the Great Wall despite the -10°C weather. Many Cabin Crew on our flight had gone before on previous layovers, but that didn’t stop my colleague and I from making the trek ourselves. We decided to hire a car and ended up going in the early morning.

I’ve seen many photos of the incredible structure, but experiencing it in person left me in complete awe. Pictures really don’t do it justice!

Some history for you- It was conceived by Emperor Qin Shi Huang (c. 259-210 B.C.) in the third century B.C. Originally designed to prevent invaders from entering into the country, the wall never really proved effective. It ended up functioning as more of a psychological barrier between Chinese civilization and the world. Still to this day, it remains a powerful symbol of China’s strength*.

Considering the frigid temperatures, we didn’t stay too long. You can’t blame us though, because you could count the number of tourists visiting on one hand. This gave my colleague and I ample photo opportunities as it is usual really busy there in the summer.

Unfortunately for us though, the Great Wall of China slide wasn’t operational and we ended up taking the cable car both ways. This just means I’ll have to come back again another time to check it out!
