Layover Life: Johannesburg, South Africa

When a colleague sent me a swap request offering me Johannesburg, South Africa in exchange for a London, United Kingdom flight, I couldn’t say no! Having done three UK flights this past month, I really wanted a change of scenery and that is exactly what I got!

A friend of mine was kind enough to take me around the city, showing me places that very few Cabin Crew have visited. I’ve been to Joburg five times, and have never really seen it from a local’s perspective.

We started the day at a cute little area called 1 Fox Street or “The Sheds”. Located in Ferreirastown, the area is composed of historic warehouses that have been refurbished to make an urban marketplace. Here you can find food and produce, as well as shops, eateries and bars.

From there, we ventured to Arts on Main; a creative hub, consisting of studios, galleries, eateries and retail spaces. While there was plenty of food vendors to choose from, we decided to have lunch at a restaurant called Canteen. For the first time, I tried biltong; a traditional South African food made of dried beef marinated with rock salt, pepper, coarsely ground coriander and vinegar. I also tried chicken liver and Springbok carpaccio! There’s always a first time for everything right?

We ended our afternoon walking around Maboneng; the heart of Joburg. There, we checked out some more local street vendors and watched some South African street performers.

While on our way back to our vehicle, we were stopped by some locals and invited to an exclusive Lipton Ice Tea event. As random as that was, it was held at a place called Living Room Jozi which gave us an unreal view of the city.

As amazing as the day was, I had to operate the flight back to Dubai in the evening with no rest! It was totally worth it though.

Passenger stories: DXB to JNB

You just never know who you are going to meet on board! On a recent flight to Johannesburg, South Africa I met a customer who I’m going to refer to as Mae.

Mae was travelling a great distance alone (from Dublin to Dubai to Johannesburg) and was returning home from a visit with her family. It was her first time flying with us, so my colleagues and I did our best to make the trip special for her!

It turns out that Mae is an elementary school teacher, who teaches grades 3/4. She told us that she is looking forward to sharing her travel stories with her students and that she couldn’t wait to show them her Emirates souvenir- a photo that we took of her on board. I told her that I couldn’t wait to show you guys mine too!

Do you have any cool passenger stories from on board? If so, please share them with me in the comments below!

Layover Life: Hong Kong

Hong Kong- it’s been a while! Instead of shopping or hitting up The Peak, this time around I took things to new heights with @RickyCrow and @LifeOfAnAirPirate. Check out some of the cool shots we got from above the city!

October Roster (2017)

Hello October! You are going to be crazy busy, but I can’t wait! This month I will be operating flights to:

  • London, United Kingdom 🇬🇧 (Gatwick)
  • São Paulo, Brazil 🇧🇷 *
  • Lagos, Nigeria 🇳🇬 *

* = New destination!

I will also be returning to Toronto, Canada to visit friends and family for a week.

When I return to base after this short trip home, I will be speaking at an international fashion conference that will be taking place at the Kempinski Hotel in Dubai. I’m looking forward to sharing more information about this with you in the days to come!

As if that’s not exciting enough, I will be celebrating my 25th birthday AND returning to training college for a service refresher course; a new program entitled Service EKcellence. This will help Cabin Crew to learn about the latest Emirates products and service developments, giving us the chance to update our knowledge and enhance our customer service abilities.

I will also be stepping foot onto a brand new continent; SOUTH AMERICA! I couldn’t be happier to finally make it to Brazil after months of requesting these flights. As usual, travel tips are always welcomed and appreciated.

…Keep in mind that things may change again though! This month I will be sending out swaps again (requests to trade flights with my colleagues), trying to add more new destinations to my roster. I will continue to keep you guys updated as October approaches.

Update: I managed to swap my flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for new destination; Lagos, Nigeria!

Youtube Channel: Update

Well, reserve month has been a bit busier than planned! I had hoped to create a few videos for you guys but I haven’t been able to find the time. While I hope for a few days off to get started on them, I thought I’d share this video produced by my friend Alyssa back in February.

We had originally created this video as a small project where I discuss what it’s like to be Cabin Crew with Emirates and to be able to share my travels with the world.

Alyssa produces tons of amazing travel videos. Check her out on YouTube!
